Introduction
A mailing list consists of names and addresses of a group of people or businesses all having one or more things in common. Newcomers to direct mail will frequently talk about “a” list, one which they intend to find or develop. However, it is rare that only one list will do the job. In direct mail, you need to think in terms of “markets”, or groups of lists.
No one really knows how many mailing lists there are on the rental market. The consensus is that there are approximately 50,000 rental lists available. However, most lists offer various selections. And each time you add selection criteria, you change the make-up of the list. So in reality, there are probably millions of lists available.
Business-to-Business Compiled List
Below we show an example of a Business-to-Business Compiled list.
Note the various selections you can choose to narrow your target audience. For instance, you can select Presidents or Owners (title select) at companies involved in Manufacturing (SIC select), with over 5000 employees (employee size select), in the state of California (state/geo select). Using the data card as your guide, you can then ask the list broker to give your exact quantities and prices based on your selection criteria.
All compiled business files will have the name of the top executives (owner, president, vice president, etc.). However, middle-management titles are not available, as there is usually much movement involved in middle management ranks, especially in today’s business climate. So, when it is necessary to mail only to middle management titles, it is often suggested that you slug title, i.e. “Attn: Marketing Manager”.
