E-MAIL LISTS Part II, Continued

Tip #10: Learn How to Use the E-mail List Datacard Effectively

When working with e-mail list datacards to research lists and calculate costs for your e-mail marketing campaign or program, there are a few things to be aware of.

One major difference between renting an e-mail list and a postal mail list is the fact that e-mail list rental fulfillment is handled by the list owner. This means that when renting an e-mail list, you will never take possession of the the list. Instead, the e-mail list owner will obtain your creative, and transmit the message for you. So, when researching an e-mail list datacard, be particularly aware of the CPM rental rate and determine whether or not this price includes the transmission/fulfillment fee. Sometimes the tranmission/fulfillment fee is included, sometimes it is not.

For example, note on Exhibit A below (COG1 datacard), the base list rental price of $150/M. In this case, the base list rental price includes the transmissioon fee ("Blast") as well as the costs for producing tracking reports. On Exhibit B however (FindLAW datacard), the base price ($200/M) does not include transmission and tracking costs. An additional $75/M will be charged for these services. This additional cost must be factored in when calculating response analysis and campaign ROI.

Both e-mail and postal mail datacards will contain information on quantity of names, prices (prices are always listed as CPM : Cost Per Thousand), list profiles, selections available, and rental terms and conditions.
